Road Signs Vanish

Made me chuckle a bit. Obviously stealing is wrong etc etc but the council can be a bit road sign happy at times. Ruins a lot of pretty villages.

There is no need for Road signs or Traffic lights. See:-

This is the future (well in Bury anyway - It's the past in continental Europe now for over 30 years!). :P

Wow, Hoffy that looks a massive improvement. Why aren't we campaigning for shared spaces in Bury St Edmunds :?: It looks like the only way to get over the information deluge that drivers are subjected to. Get your council chums on the case :D

Unfortantly Hoffys "council chums" and "council paid staff" dont seem to like the idea of shared space, They had an ideal oppitunity with the waitrose to cattle market / kings road link and chose NOT to adopt shared space, If I recall there was considerable bloging on the topic on rubys site at the time. Abbeygate Street, Kings Road ( bottom half) and St Andrews street would be ideal, if the will power existed. With shared space we all co exist, NO one form of transport has a right of way. As a car driver, with extensive experience of shared space driving in europe it really is a positive benefit all round, one day maybe bury will try it.

Despite much derision in some quarters, I think shared space has merit but I still remain to be convinced that it is a universal solution to all road traffic problems. The Buttermarket and Corn Hill seem the logical places to start if it were implemented in Bury St Edmunds - it makes sense to start centrally and work out rather than introducing ill thought out pockets in small areas. Unfortunately it would also be highly expensive to introduce and disruptive to businesses while being built (although ultimately they would reap the benefits).

In my humble view free space is ideally suited for towns of the size and disposition of Bury. Hoffy should be applauded for championing it.

However for outlying villages - no chance - for safety's sake the unsightly signs will have to stay (or be re-installed as the case may be). Have to say I didn't chuckle when I heard about these thefts but I'm not surprised given free market metal prices.

I love the idea. Just imagine how much better the market would look in a shared space town centre.
