The Angel Hotel Eaterie

Postby Aug » Wed Jan 20, 2010 6:13 pm

Just browsing the forum here and was surprised to notice that there hadn't been a thread on the Angel Hotel yet!!!

We all know their evening meals are excellent, but for those that are not aware, they do a rather excellent lunch menu. 2 courses 12.95 or 3 course 15.95 and they change the menu every day. Definitely worth a visit.

Although if I have one criticism it's that although they change the menu, it is still very similar, (you're guaranteed to find at lest one salmon dish and usually a duck and pork.) The variety used to be a lot better when they first started it and you could get some truly excellent dishes dirt cheap, I think, however, they quickly realised they were losing money and so had to tone down the menu slightly.

Even though, I still recommend it very highly.

I've been for the bargain lunch menu midweek a few times. As you say it's very good but not as good as it used to be. My only other complaint would be the service - there are two or three established waitresses who are exceptional but there seems to be a high turnover of inexperienced staff (probably 6th form or college students). The wine list is much better than anywhere else in town with the possible exception of Maison Bleue.

Yes they do champagne by the glass. They wouldn't be much of a hotel if they didn't! I've always been very impressed when ever I've been although I have never tried the bargain lunch menu. I miss eating in the vaults though. It's such a shame they closed them.

The Angel is top notch :D don't know much about the bargain menu :? but for a special evening meal it's very good. Steaks are amazing and starters are always inventive :geek: Wine list is off the chart too...do they do champagne by the glass

Have to say I don't miss the Vaults much. Definitely prefer the new restaurant, though I wish they had a bigger bar area, I used to go there for drinks all the time, can't now really though.

Any idea what they're planning on doing with the Vaults?

We went to The Angel Hotel eaterie for valentine’s day. So, following the review guidelines suggested by Admin, here goes.

1.What you ate and what else attracted you on the menu

Starters : – Scallops and Chicken Caesar Salad
Main :- Fillet Stake and Venison
Dessert :- Assortment of chocolate desserts for sharing
These were selected from the (limited) Valentine’s day menu.

2.Your feedback on the quality of the service

We were shown straight to our table and that was where the only hiccup of the evening occurred – possibly a lack of communication between front of house and the waiting staff - because we then sat there for 15 minutes without anyone coming to offer us a menu or a drink. We had to attract the attention of one of the waitresses to get service. Once that annoyance was overcome the service was exemplary for the rest of the evening.

3. Your feedback on the quality of the food

We both felt that the presentation and the flavour of all our dishes were outstanding. We’ve been here a few times now and I’ve never failed to be impressed with the quality.

4. Your thoughts on the value for money of you visit

The Angel is a bit pricey, which is why we reserve going there for special occasions. I would be interested to hear if there are any other establishments in the town that produce food to that level. I’ve not been to Maison Bleue for a number of years but I imagine they produce meals of a similar standard.
