Moving the West Suffolk Hospital

Postby PeterB » Wed Jan 20, 2010 2:43 pm

What does everyone think about moving the West Suffolk to near Westley? It makes sense to me because the current site is landlocked and not that close to the A14 but as usual nimbyism is kicking in and people in Westley and Fornham don't want it near them. Also there was some fuss about it being near a crematorium...hardly that near but is it really an issue?

To me it is Ok where it is, good transport links, heath land nearby for in mates and smokers to walk. and much better use of the site than housing. ( it is only 40 years since they moved out of the last site and thats a housing warren) The current site could be better managed, and could be slowly redeveloped. new hospital buildings maybe, a underground / multi story carpark simlar to addenbrooks. Leave it where it is, manage it better, and draw up a stratic plan then follow up.

I say move it - the nature of healthcare has changed dramatically and it's probably cheaper to build on a new site than redevelop an old one. The only way the current site can go is up but a new site off the A14 could be ideal. Access to the current site from the East is ok but poor from the West.

All well and great to say move it, if you have a car or regular bus services, currently the hospital is in walking distance for many people. No one has conducted the cost anaylasis to know if it more cost effedtive to build a new hospital on the site of the existing carparks and work backwards into the current site. The current site offers so many options moving is just too convient an answer.

Moving the hospital would incur huge costs for little or no gain in convenience - at a time when the country is strapped for cash I don't see this as a realistic option.

A multi storey car park would seem to offer a solution to the parking issue but it would likely be based on the Addenbrookes model - a private company built and runs the visitors car park there. They are free to charge whatever they want - after all there's profit to be made out of people visiting sick relatives.
