St Mary's Square

Does anyone know what on earth is going on behind the hoardings in St Mary's Square? They've been there for months.

Ah Yes I know the answer to that one.
Behind the boarding is the Blanchard Planter. A terracotta planter, from around 1874 made by a local firm of the same name. No one is sure who gave it to the town, or why it was placed in St marys square. Over time the Planter has fallen into a state of dis repair, and in these days of health and safety, some thing needed to be done. needless to say no one (council wise) wanted to own up to ownership or responsibility. local residents along with the Bury Society, Town Trust, Bury In Bloom, and St Edmundsbury Borough Council launched an appeal to address the necessary repairs. The last I heard the Bury society were looking for more financial support, and pressing for a finish date, which could be spring or early summer 2010.
I know some one at the Bury society who could give more information if you would like.

Oh this rings a bell now, thanks Buryboy. I remember someone complaining that the council wouldn't do anything to repair it. Glad they have got their act together. I keep thinking I should join the Bury Society because I agree with their aims...it's just they do seem quite out of touch whenever I read their comments in the Bury Free.

I know what you mean about the BurySsociety, they do seem to have the best interests of buryites at heart, and I am told their input on planning matters is first class and often over looked. they were formed 40 years ago to stop the council ripping down St johns street, and making a " cattle market development" an old politics teacher was involved at some time who has just received a MBE or simlar. What I have just discovered is that the Bury in Bloom mob are in fact a committee or part of the Bury Society. I was thinking on joining one day. the membership is only £10 pa or £15 pa a couple, and you get a newsletter every couple of months and the odd interesting meeting on local things. if its of interest the membership secretary is jsheild@gotadsl.co.uk.
